Excerpt from Chapter One

High above the horizon's arc, like bright smudges of chalk, the Northern Lights erase the dark. They flicker and sway, and sway again. They dim, and vanish from sight, then burst into rainbows of flame and race across the starry night. Or is it day? It's hard to know. The sun has set a month ago and there are still four months to go before there is a glow of dawn again, and light - now even daytime looks like night.

Far below, through driving snow, flies a wee plane. It's veering way too low. The engine sputters, and sputters again. Pouf! It lands with a thump and a bump on the frozen ground, with nothing but dark ice and snow all around.

The lights in the cockpit show Gnarly and Gnat - two Metro-Gnomes. For an adventure, they have left their homes far south in Toronto, to fly 'way up here . . .
